"These lyrics are way too heavy… just write some pop and let's get on with it."

Luckily, Tom Cochrane and Red Rider ignored this advice from their label, and the song that almost didn't exist became a classic hit. Prompted by a wave of recurring anti-Semitism, "Lunatic Fringe" sparked Katherine Etzel's first moments of political awareness in her youth. With the addition of banjo and a COVID-era virtual choir, she spins the song in a slightly different direction, but its narrative remains relevant: we must stay ever vigilant to protect democracy in the face of newly-awakened fascism.
