Allison Tartalia’s treatment of the national anthem holds a mirror to this uncertain moment in our history, exposing all the conflicting emotions it stirs: fear over whether our republic can survive; grief over the many lives lost; anger at the extreme polarization that has caused some to abandon science and reason at the very hour when they are urgently needed; and perhaps most of all, deep sadness as we collectively recognize that our aspirations toward equality and justice have never truly been extended to all Americans.

O say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
